Martin’s writing pulls the reader into the lives of Ava and Elaine as they defy the Nazis. I appreciate the clever ways the two are tied to each other. The author’s love of literature and the written word shines through her characters.

Historical fictions aren’t usually my go to reads so take this review with a grain of salt if you do enjoy this genre because I’m not very knowledgeable. I think based on the description of this book I was expecting a little bit different of a story. In my opinion it took a very long time for the story to really have a lot of action / get into a groove. It was about 45% of the way done before I really started to enjoy the book. Each chapter you switch POVs between the 2 main characters and it was very easy to distinguish their separate stories. I really appreciate the author note at the end and the amount of effort the author put into making this novel.
