Honestly wackier than I was expecting. Some very evocative portions, and many parts where I could barely imagine what was going on (need a terrible diagram of some cantos). Mostly seemed like an excuse to talk smack about a lot of people Dante didn't like?

Dante did seem to really like frogs, though, so that's a point in his favor.

this book is filled with so much symbolism. had to read very slowly in case i missed anything. it’s important to know about Dantes history before reading this. amazing technique and an amazing story and plot.

Do you think I'd give up?
That this might've shook the love from me
Or that I was on the brink
How could you think, darlin', I'd scare so easily?

Now that it's done
There's not one thing that I would change
My life was a storm since I was born
How could I fear any hurricane?

If someone asked me at the end

I'd tell them, "Put me back in it"
Darlin’', I would do it again
If I could hold you for a minute
Darlin', I'd go through it again

I would still be surprised I could find you
Darlin', in any life
If I could hold you for a minute
Darlin', I would do it again

For all that was said
Of where we'd end up at the end of it
When the heart would cease, ours never knew peace
What good would it be on the far side of things?

It was too soon
When that part of you was ripped away
A grip taking hold like a cancer that grows
Each piece of your body that it takes

Though I know my heart would break

I'd tell them, "Put me back in it"
Darlin’, I would do it again
If I could hold you for a minute
Darlin’, I'd go through it again

I would still be surprised I could find you
Darlin', in any life
If I could hold you for a minute
Darlin’, I would do it again

I would not change it each time
Heaven is not fit to house a love like you and I
Heaven is not fit to house a love like you and I
I would not change it each time
Heaven is not fit to house a love like you and I
Heaven is not fit to house a love like you and I
I would not change it each time
Heaven is not fit to house a love like you and I
Heaven is not fit to house a love like you and I

I know this is a classic and I know a lot of people love it, but for a tale about one's journey through hell, this was the most boring thing I've read. Reading it was like torture in hell. I get that it had a lot of political dialogue and religious inference, but I really expected a lot more excitement and such from such a tale. I finished it, but it was definitely a chore.

This book has been on my To Read List for the longest time and I’m glad I decided to finally finish it (10 years later haha)!

With all that said, I feel like it’s missing something and I can’t put my finger on what. Granted, it’s an “of its time” book that still impresses today but it still seem like something was missing to deliver to a 5-star status. Could it be detailed accounts of each Circle? Or was I expecting the punishments/damnation to be so diabolical at all levels that it would be considered gory? Whatever it is, I feel like this is one book I’m going to need to re-read once more.

I will say that it does require one to have some knowledge of Greek and Roman mythology/history alongside the Bible. Had I read this when I first picked up the book, I might have been lost. I was fortunate enough to have read Metamorphoses by Ovid which made it easy to recognize some of the people mentioned.

Circle 7 is by far the best!

I don’t think Dante believes in Catholicism. The name of my paper. Take that benches.
