This taught me so much about the Sri Lankan civil war. The depiction of the nursing home was so touching. I struggled to read some of the darker scenes, probably because the writing was so engulfing

okay i wrote a big detailed review about this but then good reads glitched and deleted it.
overall was a bit slow at the start and hard to get into but by the end i was super into it.
the topics/themes I think are extremely important to read/talk about and would definitely recommend reading if you’re passionate about refugee/immigration rights/racism in Australia.
I listened to this and the Narrator was amazing

"Possession of land is nine-tenths of the law; possession of history is nine-tenths of the future."
A cosy title and beautifully designed cover, Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens leads you to think you're about to read a comforting story, yet delivers a powerful and confronting one instead. One that, unfortunately, has nothing fictional about it. I went into this book with limited knowledge about the Civil War in Sri Lanka and how the Tamil people were treated, so this was a very eye-opening piece of literature for me. I really enjoyed the nursing home being the centerpiece and found the character's stories shined individually but got a bit lost strung together. As an Australian, this did make me deeply reflect. I know I still make mistakes and inadvertently say the wrong thing, but it reminded me to always hold myself accountable and try to do better. Chandran’s portrayal of racism, and the consequences of ignorance provoked a genuine feeling of shame, and I strongly encourage everyone, in any country, to read this story.
