Chai time at Cinnamon gardens was not what I expected at all. I thought it was going to be a nice fluffy story about an old peoples home. I had started to read this earlier in the year and put it aside when my library books on order came in. After reading the recent ‘Safe Haven’ ( excellent and thought provoking story too)by the same author from my local library I decided I must finish reading Chai time at the Cinnamon gardens. I am so glad I have read both of them.
The reminder of the back stories of refugees and those in the nursing home is something I wish many would give some thought to. I have learnt a lot about the history of Sri Lanka and the Tamil people by reading this book. While they may be fictional characters I am sure they are the stories of real people. The fictional story delivers some history in an interesting way. Written in an entertaining and thought provoking style. Highly recommend.

Yet again, Shankari Chandran has written a harrowing masterpiece. This time highlighting how both insidious and overt racism always has and always will bring devastating effects. A beautiful commentary into a subject that should not be ignored.

What a deep and beautiful story told from the perspectives of five people, and jumping time to in the past in Sri Lanka and Sydney, Australia, to the present in Sydney. So many dark and troubling times, events and issues but the core undercurrent is love
