This was quite a wonderful surprise. I was expecting a fun and fluffy read, but it was much deeper and darker than that. There was the aspect of cute and quirky old folks (Maya was awesome!) But this book also incorporates serious trauma from war and one of the best examinations of Australian racism I've ever read.

This story is one of culture, community and racism. The stories we tell each other and the stories we tell ourselves. The stories we reveal and those we hide. The stories we tell our children.
Graphic: Racial slurs, Racism, Violence
Moderate: Cursing, Domestic abuse, Hate crime, Antisemitism, Grief, Death of parent, Fire/Fire injury, Colonisation, War
Minor: Child death, Death of parent
This book is easily one of my favourite books of all time. The author does so well to honing on the types of racism that occurs in Australia as well as making the reader realise how rampant bigotry is within all aspects of society. From the start, I knew that this book was gonna hurt and it definitely delivered. I really enjoyed learning more about Sri Lanka’s history and I’m keen to learn more about it. The multiple perspective and the complexity of the characters made me feel so connected to the story.
Everyone should read this book it’s just incredible .
