I found the beginning of this book quite slow and confusing. I couldn’t understand why the author was including the stories they were. As the book went on I became enthralled.
Its comment on Australia from its migrant population is one that many can relate to. As a white Australian I loved learning the history of Sri Lanka and the people who call it home.
This story is devastating, interesting and brutal. I found myself loving the characters and their strength.
The character of Gareth was fascinating. He is a person I know exists that I’ve never really met in my left wing bubble. Hearing his perspective, although awful, was an interesting insight. It showed me how someone who considers themselves progressive can became the enemy of progress and humanity.
