Pet Sematary

Stephen King

4.01 AVERAGE

The writing felt very disjointed. The inner monologue of Louis seemed absurd half the time. It would pull me out of the story and often didn't seem to have any connection to the storyline. This is my first Stephen King novel and it was honestly a huge letdown.

I also hated the inner thoughts Louis had for the female characters. I know it was written in the 80s, but it was all a bit too on the nose. He made one comparison of a hill to the curve of a woman's breast. Completely unnecessary and weird. If anything the comments about the females were more creepy than the actual storyline.

The premise is really intriguing but it took 75% of the book for it pick up any speed. The majority of the book seemed unnecessary to the actual plot line. It didn't even feel like a slow build for solid character development - which I love. Instead it felt like I was reading an endless story about the mundane life of a man and his family.

Several reviews say it is an excellent portrayal of grief. I read a lot of books about that subject and the depth of grief didn't even cross my mind while reading through the tragedies that occurred. If anything it was an examination of death, rather than grief.

I wanted to like this book. I tried to like it. But it just didn't do anything for me. It was rather "meh" and that's why I'm giving it 2.5 stars.

5 solid stars!
It was my fault that i greedily watched 1989 Pet Sematary while i was in the middle of reading the book and for the last few chapters i was just scanning it only reading the highlights from the movie, wanting to compare what were the difference between the screen and its words.
I learned my lesson tho never going to watch any adaptation while reading the book.

I read this because I was looking for a spooky book to read and saw this one many recommendation lists. I did enjoy it, but felt like I was just constantly waiting for things to pick up and something to happen. In my opinion this is not a scary book. Very few parts even gave eerie vibes to me. It took until the last little bit of the book to pick up and even then, was very rushed, and concluded as soon as it started. I know it’s a classic but I am very surprised it is still recommended by so many as a “horror” novel.

Louis and his family have recently moved to Maine in order for Louis to work as a doctor at UMaine. His neighbour shows him the pet sematary in the nearby woods. A student was brought into the University infirmary on Louis’ first day of work. He was near death. That night, Louis “dreams” the student had visited him and brought him to the pet sematary and pointed to a deadfall of branches. The family cat gets hit by a big rig while the rest of the family is away, so Louis goes over the deadfall, into the Micmac Indian burying ground, and buries the cat. And the cat returns.

I read this when I was twelve. In my opinion the book is better than the movie although the movie is also good.
