Listened to the audio book and I wouldn't suggest it unless you've read the graphic novel before hand. The narrative did not describe the scene as well as it should. Relied to much on background noise to tell the story but I don't think it was as effective as they hoped it would be. I still love the story though, just read the graphic novel over the audio version.

vampires go chomp.
i like ben templesmith's weird art, but the plot is as dumb as it gets.

I love the premise of this story, and the format, but feel like it could have been better executed. The story is set inside the arctic circle, where the sun doesn't rise or set for 30 days — but we only really get to see what happens on day 1 or day 30, so we're left with a lot of gaps to fill. I'm interested to watch the film adaptation as the story clearly has a lot of potentential.

I read the 2017 re-telling of this sorry and liked it much more. The art here is terrible and the dialogue is a little weak. Vampires in the long night of the arctic is a good idea, but it was done better elsewhere.

How many times has Steve Niles re-written this story? This was not his best version.

I read the graphic novel kindle edition, not the audio dramatization.

I thought it was good. I had read one other book in the 30 days of night family and thought the story and the art were crap, so I was pleasantly surprised by this. That feeling probably made me a bit generous and my first reaction was to give it four stars. On reflection, there are some major problems with the story and I had to cut it back to 3 stars.

Liked: Vampires flocking to remote a remote town in the arctic circle during its month of darkness is a great idea! The art was generally good throughout (some of the vampires seem poorly drawn). The story is good for the first half of the book, and the dialogue is well written.

Didn't like: There is a significant time lapse in the story, like from day 1 to day 29.5, that occurs in the middle of the book and is a major let down. Slogging through a month long vampire attack takes a lot of pages and cutting a bit seems wise, but this book cut it all. To add insult to injury, we rejoin the story with a group of theoretically tough and canny survivors making a break for it. They are promptly slaughtered like complete amateurs. What happened in the intervening days? Was it a running battle with vampires, or were the residents of Barrow like sheep in a pen?

The ending was also disappointing. The husband of the heroine, who was among the first to die, comes back as a vampire and turns the tide in the final battle. he then kisses his wife before scuttling off to avoid the coming dawn. The story went from unique and imaginative to cliched and sappy in about 3 pages.

The movie follows the comic closer than I thought.

I violently hated the art style of this comic. It made it impossible to tell what was going on, which the writer clearly knew because this is the most tell and least show I’ve ever seen in a visual medium. Unpleasant to look at and confusing as shit. It retains points for a clever concept and an interesting “there’s always a bigger fish” take on vampire society.  I hear the movie is good so maybe watch that instead.
