dark sad tense fast-paced

I like Ben Templesmith, but there wasn't much of a story here.

I really love the movie and the comic didn't disappoint. I was a little nervous when I realized it's a whole series and not just a stand alone but I'm already intrigued by the world that was set up in this first one. The art style can be very hard to follow but it definitely suits the content of the story.

One of those instances where the art is perfectly suited to the story itself, making the sum much greater than it's parts.

Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

Though the story is compelling, due to the art style it is hard to understand visually what is going on and who characters sometimes, unless names are said. I believe the art style has a purpose toward the narrative, and with reading more, I could come to understand what that is, but, as for first impressions, it is a very unusual and hard to decipher style.
The characters feel realistic for the situations they find themselves in and aren’t flat or one demential, even with the minimal amount of dialogue that gives in depth context to the characters.
The story does jump locations and can be hard to follow exactly what’s going on when and where exactly, but with a bit more focus it can be worked out.
Overall I found the story compelling enough to see what the other volumes are about, but I won’t be recommending it unless specifically asked for.

Great Entertainment

The story is a good one, the artwork is good too, it's a good quick read.

A really enjoyable c novel

Story wise it's about what I anticipated having seen the movie. But art wise, this is 100% not my style. I try very hard to appreciate art in graphic novels but this one is very hard to deal with. It makes looking at different characters almost impossible and it makes things very hard to visualize.

Ahhh, what a great out-take on vampires…loved the art.

3.5 stars -- this graphic novel has a really stylized look, which I enjoyed. The premise is that vampires descend upon the northernmost town in Alaska in order to feed during the 30 days when the sun has dipped below the horizon. The art has a 'minimalist' feel (which is mentioned by Clive Barker in the first couple of pages) in order for the reader to focus directly on the horror elements.

An imaginative premise, backed up by solid not inspiring writing and promising (if not completely polished) artwork by Ben Templesmith. This was my second or third exposure to Templesmith's work, and I wasn't quite sold on him then, but his later work, particularly on Fell, Wormwood Gentleman Corpse and Welcome to Hoxford have made him one of my favorites.
