I could not set this book down. I started it on a whim one night and finished it two days later. I read Beautiful Boy a couple years ago and absolutely loved it, and I feel the same about this book. My dad was an addict off and on from high school to his 30’s (I think?). He’s been clean and sober for many years now and I’m so proud of him, but since knowing and seeing his history, I have alway been curious and leaned toward reading books and consuming media about addiction. Tweak is hard to read. I think if you or someone you know has struggled with addiction, you can’t help but think about them when you’re reading stuff like this. But even still, this is genuinely one of the best memoirs I’ve ever read. It’s so deeply honest. Nic is a phenomenal writer and artist. I admire him for telling his story without holding back.
This is a long winded review, but this book is worth your time, if you’ve thought about picking it up.

Nic Sheff is an amazing writer. I enjoyed his book and his fathers very much. Obviously they were hard to read knowing that happened to real life people. I wish they didn’t make this into a movie because people forget that Nic and David are actual people and they went through so much. This book did not hold back anything. It had so many difficult parts. This story is raw, emotional, tense, but also hopeful in a way. I recommend reading both books.

Before getting into what this book offered, I need to mention the racial descriptions (and unnecessary and inaccurate accents by the audiobook reader), fatphobia, and subtle sexism were all highly offputting. That said, Tweak gives naked insight into one young man's path to, struggle with, and recovery from addiction. I am glad that I read what seems to be an accurate (or at least realistic) account of such an experience. I will carry this with me in my practice as a care-giver. That said, Nic Sheff did not write solely about crime and drug use. He wrote about introspection, spirituality, relationships, meaning, and healing. It may not be a highly necessary book (though maybe D.A.R.E. die-hards would suggest otherwise), but I am grateful nonetheless that I came across it.
