I really liked the weretigers, the setting, and the characters (mostly). Would absolutely read another of her books!

This should have been a 4 star at least except I hated Shin 😂

Sorry Ji Lin I’m with your mom on this one. Not because of people gossiping about it but bc Shin does the whole I’m-mean-to-you-because-actually-I-love-you thing. 🙄 also was so whiny and manipulative at the hotel. That whole convo was alarming babe get outta there

This is the second (audio) book by Yangsze Choo that I've read. Choo is a wonderful story teller - from the first chapter, I am sucked in to the world she has created. There are many similarities between this book and her previous, the Ghost Bride: young, female protagonist; forbidden or tangled love story; journey to the world after death; all masterfully intertwined with Malaysian and Chinese folk lore. The conclusion of the love story in this book did leave me more satisfied than the one in Ghost Bride, as I felt it was more developed, but I still feel that it is emphasized too much over the mystery aspect in some parts. In regards to the central mystery, there were many red herrings and storylines that didn't quite get wrapped up or turn up to have any significance, which I suppose is part of the genre, but there were still some threads that I wish had been more consequential (particularly the final twist).

Second read update: Still a really good book, I love the characters, especially Ren. The romance is AWFUL though, chapter 42 really is just the worst.

This was very disappointing. Weak character development, implausible use of terms and references by the characters for their time and place etc. I get sorry for the characters who would have deserved a better story and to become lovable. But that just did not happen. Read this if you really have no other book available

Achei uma leitura envolvente, o mistério é bem interessante, fui enganada até o momento da revelação!
A ambientação do livro é incrível, me sentia no lugar e no tempo. Há coisas que não gostei, mas fazem sentindo levando em consideração o tempo e espaço da história. O romance não foi do meu interesse, nao gosto desse tipo de relação, mas a parte do mistério se sobressaiu, então não me importei.

this book was really good like i genuinely enjoyed the mystery of it all but i could definitely do without the stepsibling love like that was unnecessary and made me so uncomfortable that’s why it’s not a 5

This was an interesting read. I like the writing adn imagination of this author. Superstition, ghosts and afterlife were woven into the story in a beautiful way. The romance was lacking, but I still enjoyed it.

La historia en rasgos generales es interesante. El misterio esta bien.
Sin embargo la parte del "romance" me sobra y ademas  el comportamiento del "interés romántico" es preocupante y no debería presentarte como algo bueno.
Por ultimo el final es un poco abierto y te hace pensar que la autora tenia planeados mas libros.
