I loved learning about Chinese and Malaysian folklore. Plot was compelling and I never knew quite what was coming next. Ren and Yi deserve the world; this was my favorite part of the novel. Would have preferred the romance left out, though, as it felt forced and unfit for the plot. Normally I love a character who makes bad decisions, but I couldn’t stand Ji Lin’s poor romantic choices and the weird dominance of her partner. Overall a good read, but probably won’t pick it up again.

Do I have dissatisfactions with this book? Absolutely yes.  The Chinese culture representation in this book is so shallow and sometimes inaccurate. The writing is a little confusing to me. Why 4.75 stars? Bc it has stepsiblings taboo romance (literally my favorite trope) and supernatural power elements and it DELIVERED.
