This is an amazing Victorian classic! I absolutely love how Gaskell weaves social commentary and romance together to form a complex and beautiful story. I learned a lot about the dynamics of workers and manufacturers during the Victorian period while reading this. I love how Gaskell includes the working class in her story and doesn’t shy away from asking tough questions about industrial life! The two main characters Margaret Hale and John Thornton are such well developed and great characters, and I loved reading about them. The love story of Margaret and John was a slow burn and it was absolutely lovely. ❤️ Will definitely read more books by Elizabeth Gaskell!

Um, this was amazing. I loved the mini series and have a hard time separating the two, but the book is absolutely wonderful. Bit hard to get through at times, but a great story about people and family and love.

I just...it's one of those books I will treasure forever.

Words cannot express how much I love this book. I was so sad when it ended because I wanted more! It truly is a treasure.

This is a blatant rip off of Pride and Prejudice—and I’m all for it. The antagonism, the family pride, distrustfulness of strangers, the sexual tension of saving your will-be lover from a riot—all great. Throw in a side plot about a mutineer (which it does) and this book has a lot going for it. It was a 4-5 star read for me through the 1st half, but then… people start dying off along with the action. The heroine gets caught up too deeply in her not-actual failings to be very strong or interesting. While the final ending reunion is cute, we are deprived of the aftermath of the romantic pairing, where they should have to deal with the social ramifications of getting together. What a shame, this was almost great!
