MASTERPIECE! I love Oblivion. It is one of my favourite books EVER.

The structure of the chapters is so smartly organised. The shifts in POV are key. The third person narration is the same as before, but the first person narration from Holly is new. I’ve started to think that she’s a reader-stand-in for you to insert yourself in the story. Am I right?

While I’m asking questions — I’m still not 100% clear about what happened at the very end of the story. I have my own interpretation, but it’s dark. I’d love to hear yours.

I’ve been re-reading Oblivion since it was released. Over these 10+ years, my values and preferences have changed. I cannot gloss over the fact that I am very uncomfortable with dark scenes, even in fictional novels or television shows. Now the issue is that the plot of Oblivion is nothing but a chain of dark events. In fact, it’s like “A Series of Unfortunate Events” — Armageddon Edition.

So, even if my perspective has shifted, it still means A LOT to me. When someone asked me what my favourite book was, for many years my answer was: OBLIVION.

. . . This book is so hard to describe in words. No wonder it took 4 years to write. I can never get over how tough the situation was for all five of them, Matt in particular.
Oblivion has it all... Anything and everything absolutely horrible you can think is in this book. It is beautiful and horrific at the same times.
You've got Pedro in a city that erupts into chaos as multiple natural disasters occur at once.
You've got Scarlett recovering from a wound that almost kills her and in a city where the Sheik wants to make her his bride
Jamie is in a boat sailing away from a city, facing cannibals and horrific warriors.
Scott ... You'll find out about him once you read it.
And Matt... Oh, poor Matt. Everything that is listed above is so much worse for Matt and as a 15-year old it is astounding that he can cope.
Oblivion has everything; suspense, mysteries, action...
You'll never regret picking up this book, I can't explain it in too much detail without giving it all away.

Wow. Talk about an explosive ending! At first I was wondering if it was necessary to have all our heroes split apart and need to find each other again. But this actually set up my favourite book in the series, with each character having their own new adventure in a new place with new hurdles and circumstances. This led to insane action, near escapes, and wicked betrayals.

Everyone finished their arcs and became layered characters, and I have to say I will miss many of them. Particularly Jamie and Richard! Many of the villains were positively devious and the monsters were terrifying. I wasn't sure who all would standing in the end. There was no shortage of heartache and tragedy by the end, and I was constantly tense about who might make it out alive.

This has been an engaging series with a lot of unique elements and fierce action sequences. I had a great time reading it and recommend it to anyone looking for a YA book reminiscent of a Hollywood blockbuster. It was simply fun!
