Spare, clean, open writing that sweeps over the pages like a river of poetry that sometimes freezes over into prose. Incisive and detached yet also locked into place. Made me want to go to the plains and mountains.

A blurb on the back cover rates this prose on a par with that of Annie Dillard and Thoreau.
I don't think so. But it's a decent read.

it’s a solid read, with lots of informative anecdotes that i enjoyed reading. some parts of this book have not aged terribly well. Relative to other books in the 70’s/80’s, I’d say this one holds up pretty well.
