The world building of this book is about as subtle as a rapidly derailing train and I love that for her.
she’s all exposition, the vibes of reading a wikipedia page late at night on a niche enough topic that the author has just decided to insert their personal experiences into it unchecked, and i was living for it

Where do I begin?
How about … Please read this book
This book focuses on El and her journey at the Scholomance!
If you’re interested in a book about friendship, loneliness, dark academia, and an enemies-to-lovers subplot, then this is a book for you. I found it easy to jump into and understand!
^ And connecting to this, besides the tropes *sigh*, Naomi Novik’s writing is detailed and engaging. It makes you want to keep reading and immerse yourself in the Scholomance. I don’t think I’d survive, to be honest. I loved how she described the creatures in the book and the magic system!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait to hop into the next two books in the series. I genuinely have not stopped thinking about this book since finishing it 9 days ago

First Naomi Novik novel that I have read and it has left me feeling conflicted. I did enjoy parts of the story and I did love the characters but it was very info dumpy to the point where I couldn't really keep up and it left me feeling confused. I also felt that the main story line didnt kick off until the second part of the book.
At this point, I feel unsure on whether I will read the next book but the ending did leave me feeling intrigued to where the next book will take our lead character.

Quite enjoyed this read. Has quite a simple, fun dark academia survival plotline. I like the sarcastic, no nonsense MC who is only nice if respect is earned. I like the slight aloofness of OL (although suspect the next book has a reveal waiting). I like the idea that being magic/a witch carries deadly threat compared to being mundane and how they explain why mundanes are not at risk. The level of deadly risk inside the scholomance is quite whacky. I can understand the idea of clumping them all together to attract mals but why must they also have such rubbish conditions while living there? Weight limits for resources coming in, limited supply of dangerous extra resources while there, poisoned insubstantial amounts of food, a vending machine that kicks out WW1 rations? It has a slight overlydramatic edge to it, but still found it fun and engaging. And Iiked the drawing on class divides in experience. Eagerly reading (listening) on.

This was a deadly hogwarts in the best way possible!! I had so much fun exploring the world & these characters. I really appreciated how Novik explored El’s struggle with her anger vs. letting things go, and seeing her real time processing/understanding her decisions. It made El feel so human and relatable (even tho she’s supposed to be 16). Orion & El’s “relationship” is very wholesome & adorable & YA but I’m rooting for them just the same. I fell into this world & i immediately picked up book two.
