Harry Potter WISHES it was this good.

While I really enjoyed this book, I found it kind of hard to get into in the beginning and the pacing felt a little off. Granted, I was listening to the audiobook, which meant I couldn't skim over the parts of her internal dialogue that dragged on a bit, but still. I absolutely love Naomi Novik and I can't wait for the 2nd book now...

i enjoyed this!! honestly more lighthearted and humorous than i anticipated! felt like we were in El’s head so much that sometimes i just got lost in the lengthy paragraphs and then plot points would happen in the middle of those paragraphs and i’d miss it. i enjoyed how diverse the student body was, but sometimes i was a bit confused about the world building, but towards the end i figured it out for myself.

This ended up being a pretty quick read. There's a lot of exposition and not much dialogue, so that took some time to adjust to. Without much dialogue though, I had a harder time caring about other characters. Maybe this was intentional as El is more of a loner? Overall, I enjoyed.
