Absolutely reeks of an American author writing a British school setting.
adventurous

mysterious
Really grateful to my dear friend for recommending this one! It was such an easy, engaging read. It was also fun, sharp, and refreshingly original. The world-building is clever, the tone is witty, and it kept me hooked all the way through. I’ll definitely be continuing with the series.

This book was interesting. It was fun. It was cool. "Magic school" is such a commonly used setting but the Scholomance is genuinely different from others I've read. Fans of "magic school" as a setting and Gideon the Ninth will almost certainly enjoy this series.
I am always a fan of a deeply flawed main character, and The Scholomance absolutely delivered in this regard.

It's a fairy tale for adults in the same vein as Harry Potter and the Netflix series "Wednesday."
It's funny that at the end of the book Naomi Novik thanks a friend of hers for telling her that her audience for this book was people in their 30s... and she didn't believe her. Naomi, I am 38 and I was thoroughly engrossed- as I was with your other books Spinning Silver and Uprooted.

I didn’t know I needed a dark sarcastic Harry Potter in my life but here it was anyway. So fun.

Book is honestly hilarious. The school itself works in interesting and amusing way--||my favourite is when El mentions that if you accidentally see a page of a book in some long lost ancient language, the school might assume you are now learning that language, and start giving you spells in it. The problem is there are no resources for leaning that language anymore, so your progress is screwed.|| El is also such a great yapper and sorry but every time she's seething I find it so entertaining.
