Loved the concept, hated the characters.
Edit: ended up giving it another chance. The concept is really good, loved the world building but characters are underdeveloped.

This book is VERY heavy on exposition, which I feel like could have been done in a smoother way in many instances, perhaps adding to the character development or progressing the plot, which itself is quite simple/basic, instead of "just" world building.
The story seems very diverse at the beginning, as it's a story about a magic school with students from all over the world. Unfortunately, the diversity stayed pretty surface-level. Perhaps that will change in the sequel, having more space to develop individual characters as the world is already set up. The themes of classicm and privilege are talked about in an interesting manner in this book already, which I hope will be expanded on in the following books.
The setting itself is absolutely brutal, but beacause of the aloof and sarcastic narrator, it isn't overall heavy, disturbing or very sad to read.
The parts about the connection of different languages/dialects and magic were intriguing, and while the book in my opinion certainly isn't perfect, it is an enjoyable read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but I’m not particularly excited about the next one if that makes sense at all.

I don't even know what to write here: this was just really good and fun. Like, a bit dark and a bit cavalier, but in a really refreshing way.
