As a fan of the author's previous works, I decided to give this a try despite my hesitation with its subgenre and the vibe I was getting from reviews. This was perhaps a mistake on my part, and I probably should have stuck to my guns. The book was... fine. Readable and mechanically stable, if with many missed opportunities and odd choices. The two main characters have strong personalities, but everybody around them comes off as dreadfully and given the author's previous work confusingly flat. The setting is both deeply involved but also deeply tongue-in-cheek, setting up a tension between those features that I didn't much enjoy. It's also a book without much actual tension or drama, since once you get past the first 100 or so pages the story has already run out of steam and is mostly just puttering along until new things happen. Which is *wild*, considering this is set in a school where 50% of the students die during the 4 years they'll attend!

Combine all of this with the fact that the genre and style are just not my speed, and I don't have much of a desire to read the sequels. The twist at the very very end *is* quite surprising, but in a way that made me go "Huh?" more then a way that made me go "WHAT!?", which does not leave me terribly enthusiastic about what is to come.

Guess I'll wait for her next series, whatever it is. Shouldn't take too long!

I love El. tortured soul, prickly, grumpy head El. loving her is like trying to hug a cactus, but I'll do it anyway

the ending has me spiraling

3,5/5
