This comic is absolutely amazing! I can't wait to pick up the rest of the series. It's well written, the art is beautiful and the world is fascinating. I love it.

I was initially a bit disappointed in the change in art style, but it grew on me as I moved through the story. This is much darker than Animal Rites, and offers an expansion of the world surrounding Burden Hill. I highly recommend it.

Ben Dewey is perfect for drawing this. In both [b:The Tragedy Series: Secret Lobster Claws and Other Misfortunes|21853699|The Tragedy Series Secret Lobster Claws and Other Misfortunes|Benjamin Dewey|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1421837134l/21853699._SY75_.jpg|41125570] and [b:The Autumnlands|23862438|The Autumnlands, Vol. 1 Tooth and Claw|Kurt Busiek|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1435307956l/23862438._SY75_.jpg|43472170] he has shown a great ability to draw animals that convey human-like emotions and yet still look like animals. This may be the best his art has been yet.

Earlier installments of "Beasts of Burden" were more lighthearted and playful, but this one intensifies the supernatural horror factor, as well as lengthening the story arc to include four single-issue comics. The band of "wise dogs" have to use their magic powers to fight some really bad men who've harnessed a great evil power. Expect lots of blood and guts. (You do not need to read previous installments to understand and enjoy this one. This is an independent story.)

The hardbound edition is beautiful and perfect for Halloween.

Art 5, story 3.

by its nature beasts of burden is an odd mix of anthopomorphic animals - something from which we typically expect child friendly, positive content - and supernatural horror, a genre in which gore and heavy themes are to be expected. for me, the change in art style and the increased level of gore in this edition moved it from being something im comfortable with, to a level i found uncomfortable. i also just prefer the other comics in terms of their plot.
