who is surprised that anne carson is very good. simonides/celan. pound's economies. do you like money? become a greek poet in the fifth century bc. actually this is one of carson's most sustained & analytical books, an excellent reminder of How Good Celan is, & I'm learning things about simonides. would luv to reread also

The epitome of generative comparative literature, of dialogism, of anne carson. This was her last work that I had left to read - thanks @past Tessa for saving it for a rainy day. I loved it :(

very interesting!!! i feel as though i may not be as qualified to give my thoughts on this (never read celan, never read simonides, don't have a poetry/classics background, only read this because it was by anne carson) but the connections carson makes between poet and language and money and transaction literally blew my mind when reading.

A poet's despair is not just personal; he despairs of the word and that implicates all our hopes. Every time a poet writes a poem he is asking the question, Do words hold good? And the answer has to be yes: it is the contrafactual condition upon which a poet's life depends.
