This story written in the 80s by Koontz about a genetically-engineered golden retriever with above average, almost human intelligence and the deforme monster tracking it is a wonder. Einstein saves a lonely, depressed man from an unseen horror on a hike. The dog finds and creates a small family.
My 10 year old boxer (of mostly average intelligence) died in June and the scene where Einstein has to go to the vet for dystemper was hard to read, but familiar. Koontz does a great job of making the reader balance the terrible nature of the monster with the pity we should feel for it. Recommended, but bring tissues.

Horror for dog lovers. Me, I'm more of a cat person, so I encountered some 'dead space'. With a monster on the loose, the government on the hunt and a wacko contract killer sniffing around, I wasn't always pleased with the focus on Travis, Nora and their lubby dubbiness. Understandable for thematic reasons, partly anyway, but frustrating nonetheless. Especially towards the end. Couldn't help feeling that it takes too long for the hitman to pop up and the Outsider to reappear. Great when the pulp hits the van, but the family breaks in between; not so.
Heart pounding through every single page and long after I had finished the book.
