I read this book because my son is reading it (he's 14) and he gets really freaked out by scary books. So I told him I'd read it with him. I'm not really a Dean Koontz fan -- but I must confess the other reviews of this book are correct...it's got to be the BEST dog character in any book I've ever read! Read it, just for the dog!
One of the first thrillers I ever read, and just as enjoyable all these years later. The immortal story of friendship and loyalty through adversity, with just the right touch of mystery and suspense.
Sure, Koontz could have been more realistic with the two protagonists, Nora and Travis. Nora gets over a life of abuse within a couple months, and Travis was in the Navy or Army or Marines or something, which is never brought up until it's convenient.
It's a story about a talking dog and his weirdo disfigured murderous brother. You're reading this for realistic character development?

A good friend recommended I read this book (one of her all time favourites) as she knew that like her, I am a huge dog lover.
This book did not disappoint!! Absolutely fantastic read! Would highly recommend to any animal lovers out there 😊

This was pretty good for a slow-burn horror, although I generally like a faster pace. The plot was interesting, the characters were likeable enough and some pretty exciting stuff happens, but I did find it quite long winded.
Great story for the genre; many parallels to Frankenstein. I enjoyed this book, maybe because it's the first Koontz I've ever read, and most likely the last! Not my thing. #69/100 #greatamericanread

Pretty one dimensional characters, but a fun story none the less.
