The book started out really strong! The parts between the outsider and other characters were really well written and the tension held strongly throughout. I especially loved the action! My main issue was my strong dislike for the contract killer and his perverse desire for killing. Of course, the fact that I disliked the character so much speaks for the writing skill of Koontz, but certain parts really disgusted me. Also, since the book was written in the 80s there were certain ways the female character was portrayed which I also could only roll my eyes at.
EDIT: Now that I am further along in my reading journey and have had more time to digest this book I have to lower my rating from three to two stars. I remember that I actually skipped/skimmed close to 150 pages in the end because I just could not care less at that point. OVERALL: I will never recommend this book unless I know the person likes traditional old-school thrillers.

I loved scenes with this sassiest and the smartest doggy, some family moments were nice too. Last 50 pages were pretty suspenseful.
The plot started to pick up quickly only after the half way through the book. Some of the side plots didn't even make sense at the end: he just killed people and was a little crazy, that's all, absolutely no point. I must admit, I hated the female protagonist (Nora) because of how badly she was written. She was very obviously written to be liked by male audience: she's smart (but not too smart), beautiful, talented, virgin (but also surprisingly good in bed). It gave me a deep feeling of discomfort, and I couldn't shake this feeling till the end. I heavily preferred one Pov and struggled with every other.
I remember reading this when I was in high school. I know I wasn't too jazzed about reading at the time, but this novel single-handedly pulled me into a literary parallel universe that propelled me into the life of a reader. It is the first time I can remember choosing a book over television, video games, telephone, or food :)
-5 stars. more than 5. i loved this book, and absolutely adored Einstein the dog.
"for the first time in three years, Travis felt needed, felt a deep connection with another living creature. for the first time in three years, he had a reason to live."
"okay, so lets say i'm here as an observer."
"my ass."
"what about your ass?"
"it's got a pain in it, and the name of the pain is Walter."
"have you some secret life i've never suspected? are you a geriatric James Bond?"

A little out of my realm of reading but overall a good book!
Saw the movie as a kid. And it scared me a bit from what I can remember. Loved the story. Love the dog :)
