I wanted to like it more than I did. I enjoyed the beginning but found the story less compelling as she grew. The audiobook reader was *excellent*. I finished it primarily because the reader was so strong.

Great historical fiction following the life of a young African American woman in the time of the civil war and the choices she makes along the way. Separated into longer sections, I liked the quotes!

2.5 - it was fine. I feel like the story could’ve been more interesting, but the way it was written was a bit boring to me.

Beautiful story
Beautiful story. I’m not sure how to digest this one. I do feel the writing was “spacy”, seemingly everywhere. Every paragraph seemed to be written by various authors, as the writing style changed a lot. I couldn’t get past years going by between paragraphs. What happened with Libertie and Emmanuel? I hope to find out soon...

This book frustrated me. I was drawn in at the beginning but found that the more I read, the less interested I became. Although the writing was beautifully poetic at times, I found the characters to be shallow.
This book skips large chunks of time, and I felt confused in parts… almost like something was missing.
I found the ending very dissatisfying - it didn’t feel like it organically fit in with the rest of the book in any way.
