"Mi club de homeworko es su club de homeworko."
Mostly spoiler free. Spoilers will be in the 2nd paragraph of the "what I didn't like" section. This book was actually pretty good. I personally enjoyed it from beginning to (sort of) end, and I really, really liked the actual mystery part of it. I'll be excluding the plot summary because the synopsis of this book tells you everything you need to know.
───── ⑅ the protagonists ⑅ ─────
Pippa Fitz-Amobi, our wonderful smart girl with a soda brand name. It could have been ANY name. Why Pippa? Christ. Anyway, Pip as a character was a little bit annoying at times. She was very good at piecing information together, which makes one wonder why the police, who are literal professionals, couldn't do what she did, but whateverrrr. Pip constantly puts herself in danger for the sake of solving Andie's murder case, and she's very clearly obsessed with it. She's extremely impulsive and struggles with communication.
Ravi Singh! I don't have much to say about him. He was very understanding with Pip, and was initially sane enough to understand that maybe getting this random girl from his brother's old school to deeply involve herself in a closed-case investigation wasn't the safest idea ever. Other than that, he was a relatively simple character who had a habit of scratching his head every time he was confused or nervous and always liked to crack jokes.
───── ⑅ what I liked ⑅ ─────
The way this story is formatted was really fun to me. We have some "chapters" dedicated to her entries for her project. Interviews are written down like transcripts. It really helps with the feeling that you're solving the case alongside the characters, and they're not doing it all for you. All the information we learned was learned with Pip. She never knew more than us.
This was also a very very easy read, and I think it'd be difficult for a book like this to put you in a slump. With how fast paced it is and how short the chapters usually were, I can't say I ever really found myself bored. It was really hard to stop myself from wanting to keep going every time I finished a chapter.
───── ⑅ what I didn't like ⑅ ─────
While I guess I should have expected it because it's YA, I didn't really like the writing that much. I found it really cringy sometimes and just overall immature, though that could have also been because the characters are all high schoolers...but they're seniors? So I don't know; I just didn't really like it that much. The adult characters in this book didn't feel like adults, especially Pip's father.
The ending is where this fell off for me. I was shocked when I learned who had done everything (I was too slow to guess it lol), but I found it VERY strange that
