I decided to re-read this book because I read it in high school and I remembered I didn’t like it but could not remember why that was. I still don’t know. I think this is an alright book but it is incredibly violent and I didn’t remember that. One of the towns in Stephen King’s books is called Castle Rock and I never noticed before now that it was named from this book. This may not be relevant to this review but I found it interesting.
Overall, I always enjoy books set during WW2.

I will say that this was a very dark novel with a takeaway that evil lies in all of us.

yeah i understood it but i think overall the writing was stodgy and repetitive. there was a disconnect between the paragraphs of positioning and describing the landscape and where the characters are and what they’re doing which was chunky and felt like reading a textbook and the dialogue which was quick and hard to understand (doesn’t indicate who is speaking most times, lots of cut offs and implications) and yeah I understand that their trauma/shock is not letting them see or acknowledge whats right in front of them but as a reader I’d like a bit more info like even 0.2% more info. if I didn’t already know the plot mostly going in to this I would’ve been completely blind to how they even got on the island. but yeah mostly just repetitive bickering and in the end, as always, racism. i really do love the story so i wish it was better.

Bok vi läst i svenskan i år No. 2. Roligare att läsa än Kafka men får en lägre ranking pga. kvaliteten.
