A very beautiful way to end the series this book was. This book is the most sad out of all of them since World War One occurs but it shows how strong the Blythes truly are. The main character is the youngest of Anne’s children Rilla and she is very loveable we get to see her truly grow through out the duration of the novel. And that last line was truly heartfelt

I cried many times within this book.

Rilla is an enjoyable character to read with her behaviors and the choices she makes. It is incredibly emotional and bittersweet to see Anne's family endure the war together. The relationships are one of the main drives of this book and also one of the biggest reasons as to why this novel is so emotional.

I really enjoyed this sequel. (The previous book strayed too far for me-having been more of a side story then a sequel. This book seemed to fit more snugly into the fold of Anne's life as she progressed into middle age with her family)

It was bitter sweet to read the last in the series, and to see Anne's youngest daughter only a little older than she herself was in the very first book.

The real life timing of my reading had brought a much heavier weight to the war than I might have felt at a different time of reading. I was much more able to identify with the feeling of a war happening far beyond our borders, the hopelessness and lack of control.

Rilla has some of the same charming day to day drama of previous books, but there is a much darker and much more serious tone. There is loss- but there is also hope. And hope has always proven strongest in the world of Montgomery. Publishing this on the heels of the war, you can see that she has poured much of herself into the novel.

While it is maybe not the end I would have hoped for- for Anne, I have every faith that her and her family would make the most of the happiness they could find in the years to follow. Anne and Gilbert raised brave, strong, and outspoken children, with the best qualities of both their parents.

Definitely more sad and emotional than any other book in the series, but I see that as a way the series has matured and changed alongside Anne. I had been disappointed by the lack of Anne in Rainbow Valley, so it was nice to see her a little more in this book, even if it wasn’t the same spunky, joyful, dreaming Anne of yesterday. I still feel so connected with Anne that I think it makes me love her children even more. I grew to love them very quickly in this book, especially young Rilla and Walter.

It was very interesting to hear about the events of the war outside of history books, through the lives of the women who stayed at home as their men went off to fight. How the world changed. How hopeful they were about the world when it was over, knowing what I know now about what was to come just a couple decades later. They felt like real people to me, and my heart aches with theirs.
