Oof. Couldn't finish this one. After reading "The One," I added several Marrs books to my "want to read" list and picked this one up as soon as I could. I truly did not expect it to be so difficult to get through, and according to other reviews, I'm not the only one. I still intend to read more John Marrs after this because he's clearly capable of writing interesting plots - but while this isn't poorly written, the story line felt like a cop drama re-run marathon at my grandma's house. I found myself unable to connect to any of the characters and ended up not being able to finish it at all. I told myself if the story still hadn't grabbed me by the time I hit the halfway mark, I'd throw this book in the river and move on to my Book Of The Month Club pick. I'm social distancing right now but live very close to the water. If you see me by the Hudson, please keep 6 feet of distance between us.

I have read five mystery/thrillers in a row and each one was less satisfying than the one before. Time for a pallet cleanse!

Summary:
“He hides in the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment. Each kill is calculated, planned and executed like clockwork. Struggling to balance her personal and professional life, young DS Becca Vincent has landed the biggest case of her career — and she knows that it will make or break her.”

Wow! I was reading books under recommendations of what I recently read and paid no attention to whom the author was. I then realised all the 5 star ratings I have given are to John Marrs. This book was gripping, non predictable and thoroughly well written. I am still in shock and it has left me wishing it was 1000’s of pages longer. Outstanding!

I haven’t read a John Marrs book I didn’t like and this is no exception. I like the different POVs from the main characters. Always interested when the killer is also telling the story. Why do crazy exs always make such good psychopaths. Definitely recommend.
