This was definitely different than the other books I've read by this author. It's a police procedural, which I love this genre. But the more I read the more I saw his normal twists and veers that make it his signature style.
I'll admit it took me a minute to connect with the main character, Becca, but I finally did and I was rooting for her both personally and professionally.
The chapters from the killers pov were quite disturbing and they were quite the sick person.
And the more I read and the more information that came out about everyone, the more this fit with his other novels in spirit and types of characters. There was a moment that shocked me but I don't want to spoil anything, but you'll know when you get there.
This updated version includes a new epilogue that sheds a little more light on the previous ending that some might have thought a little open ended. It's a nice addition to story.
I was able to both listen and read and enjoyed Elizabeth Knowelden's narration. She does a great job voicing all three narrators and making the killer as disturbing as they needed to be.

This book has John's signature twists and turns, keeping the reader on their toes and making it hard to put down. It's another homerun of a thriller for me, and I highly recommend this for lovers of mystery psychological thrillers. I discovered him last year when one of his books was chosen for an online buddy read, and he's become a fast favorite author.
When this was re-released with a new cover design and a bonus chapter, I was thrilled to be chosen by Brilliance Publishing/Brilliance Audio to listen to it through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Don't sleep on John Marrs' books, they are worth reading.
A fast-paced, twisty thriller that had me second-guessing everything. 💥 When a ruthless killer starts staging elaborate murders across London, DS Becca Vincent and facial recognition expert Joe Russell are brought together to stop him—before he strikes again.
This isn’t just a police procedural—it’s a mind game. Marrs brilliantly weaves emotional backstories with chilling suspense, keeping you hooked until the final, jaw-dropping reveal. Just when you think you’ve figured it out… you haven’t. 😱

I struggled with this a little at first but then something clicked and I was hooked.
I liked the way the police were time-pressured throughout, and then with the big twist in the middle.I still can't believe the author killed off one of the two main characters halfway through the book!
I look forward to reading more of this author's books in the future.

Wow!
Her Last Move blew my mind - so so good!
I have read some of John's other books, that were more speculative thrillers and really enjoyed them, so I was looking forward to this one.
Her Last Move is more of a police procedural, but is trademark John - pacy, twisty, very clever and offers something a little unique, this time in the guise of police super recognisers. I must admit I didn't they actually existed, but they do - a group of people who have a photographic memory and remember 80% of faces they see. It really added a fascinating edge to the story.
It's a race against time for the police as a serial killer is terrorising London, executing gruesome murders - there seems to be a reason he's choosing his victims and they need to figure it out fast before more bodies pile up.
It opens with a bang and doesn't let up, but the last 30% or so really careers away - I literally could not tear through it fast enough, both for the plot and because I really loved and cared about the main characters, super recogniser Joe and DS Becca Vincent. They really come to life from the pages and are characterised brilliantly.
The threads all come together in the most satisfying and genius way and the ending made me gasp.
I absolutely loved it - Her Last Move is best crime thriller I have read in long time! 5 stars plus!
