I thought the book was pretty ok, I didn’t love it and probably won’t read it again but I didn’t hate it. My most favourite part is definitely the writing style, Amy Zhang is sooo talented. The characters are pretty toxic to each other and Janie made me kinda mad at times. I didn’t hate the book but it definitely wasn’t the worst thing I’ve read. Also And content warning: there is rape and suicide. Neither are graphic but the rape scene may be uncomfortable to read depending on the person. The suicide isn’t graphic but it’s a main point of the book so be warned. Hope this helps <3
Moderate: Rape, Suicidal thoughts, Suicide, Fire/Fire injury
This was an emotional read for me, a sad story. It reminded me of 13 reasons why.
i swear my edgy younger self thought this book was the peak of poetic prose and gobbled up every written word in it, but they don't know what's going on half of the time.
frankly, six years later, i still don't. help.

Second book I have read by Zhang, is not quite as good ad the other one, but still a solid read, and she is a very talented author, I look forward to exploring more of her work.

It's a surprise I finished it without liking any of the characters. I guess, I like how the event was told, building up to the revelation of what really happened though I kinda figured it out early but there's always a sense of satisfaction when your hunches are proven to be right. Lol. The ending however, IMO, is a little underwhelming.
I was really excited about this book because I enjoyed Falling into Place by the same author last year. I loved the writing style and the way the author chose to tell the story so I was eager to see how the plot of this new book would play out. It sounded like it could be a similar style to the first, just with different characters and a different plot.
I did find that I had a harder time getting absorbed into this book than with Falling into Place. The friendship between Janie and Micah wasn't fun to read and I never really understood why they were still friends at all. It was a toxic friendship and since I don't really enjoy reading those and the friendship was a huge part of the book, it made it hard for me to really get into the overall story.
Both main characters on their own were interesting. I liked Janie's personality, her free-spirited way of looking at the world. Micah was the complete opposite, subtle and easily overlooked. The contrast between their POVs worked well, highlighting how different they were and using the non-linear style with Janie in the past and Micah in the present.
The writing was very addicting to read, just like in Falling into Place. It flowed well and even when I wasn't enjoying reading about the toxic friendship, I was still enjoying the writing. I didn't find the switch between POVs or from the past to the present to be abrupt or out of place, which was good. With how much enjoy the writing style alone, I look forward to more from Amy Zhang.

It was a...enjoyable book I'll say. I think I liked the characters more than I liked the actual story. It was interesting to say the least. Though these types of books are my favourites types and I liked it. I liked the writing style, story was pretty deep and was a little hard to follow but once you understand what's going on it's a good read.
Micah and Janie were adorable and I wish there was a lot more of them!
