This was by far the most disappointing book I’ve ever read. The entire time I expected it to get better but the characters got more annoying and toxic as the story went on. Perhaps the only thing that pulled me through this book was Amy’s unique writing style, which I genuinely enjoyed. The ending had me speechless but not in a nice way at all. Not to mention the second half of the book was entirely triggering and without a warning. What happened to that?

the writing of this book was good but it doesn't have flavor. it doesn't give you the urge to continue, the urge to know what happens next and it's so disappointing. i was excited to read this but it just wasn't IT. i ended up scanning the pages and i eventually reached the grand reveal which was not as satisfying as i hoped.

I think Zhang's writing style is gorgeous and the narrative definitely held me interest over the course of the story. This book is just incredibly sad....
This is one of those books that has lyrical beautiful writing. And at the beginning that sucks the reader in and makes the reader want to see where it is going.
What is the author trying to tell me with how this is written?
Where is this going?
What will be happening that makes the author tell the story this way?
And for half the book it does make sense that this book reads more or less like a dream. Because the characters feel that way to.
We have a girl that feels as if she wants it all but at the same time is happy to have those tiny little moments when she can get them.
And we have this boy that doesn't really seem to know where he fits in and on top of that loses a big chunk of his memories for the most part of this book which makes everything he says and experience even more unsure.
But they are friends and it works since for some strange reason it wouldn't make sense for them NOT to be friends.
but after half the book the strange writing and constant back and forth of what is and isn't real, what and how the characters behave gets boring and predictable because while its fun and interesting at the beginning once I read about it two or three times i don't need it to happen again and again.
and with this strange lyrical whimsical writing style that doesn't really give a huge amount of substance to care the story alone the entire books starts to sink fast.
To me this book felt a bit as if the author tried to do something great and she started out that way. But somewhere along the book she didn't really know how to carry it to the finish line and because of that the plot, the characters and the writing started to feel used and repetitive.
I do think that the book as some good moments and it really shows how strange friendships can be and how sometimes even thought friendships feel right they can be very wrong, or the other way around that sometimes friends can feel wrong and as if you shouldn't really spend time with that person but actually those are the exact people you really should be spending time with.
If that makes sense.
All in all it was a good read.
But i wish the author would have made the ending a bit better and didn't try to make it seem as if it was this big reveal of what happened since its very clear what happens pretty early on in the book.

It starts raining again. It's okay. We've always liked water. no, that's not right. Janie loved fire. She loved markers and rocks and ire. I like water, though. I like the way it waits, and when you touch it, it both moves away and clings to your finger. I like the way it rises, like memory, or fear. You told me once that i was made of water, i think. i don't remember. I don't remember again but
what if
it just
doesn't
matter?

Janie and Micah, Micah and Janie. That’s how it’s been since they were children, when Janie Vivian moved next door. Janie says Micah is everything she is not. Where Micah is shy, Janie is outgoing. Where Micah loves music, Janie loves art. It’s the perfect friendship- as long as no one finds out about it.

You know those books that could either be a hit-or-miss? This Is Where The World Ends was kind of a miss.
Don’t get me wrong, it had a lovely writing style. Especially where it contained “The Metaphor”, but there were quite a few things that rubbed me up the wrong way.
Okay, I admit. I had trouble with one of the protagonists. And when you have trouble with the protagonist, you know that this won’t end well. Why? Because the protagonist is the person who leads you into their fictional world. They have to, essentially, be likeable. It doesn’t matter if they’re flawed or not- personality likeability is key for me.
Which is why I couldn’t really connect with Janie. Which was weird, because there were parts of her that I liked. Her whimsical nature, love of fairy tales and possibilities. Her thoughts were haphazard always and I found it interesting. But,
I felt like her and Micah had a pretty toxic relationship (a fact stated by many other characters in the book, but I guess temporary deafness is a thing). There were too many times that Janie toyed with Micah’s feelings that kind of got me annoyed. She talked about how she was going to “fall in love” with Micah eventually, but then goes out with other guys? I got so confused with her logic. I would understand if she goes out with guys if she doesn’t know she’s in love with Micah- but the fact that she knew it would happen…confused. So confused. There were points that she used him because she knew what he felt for her. And Micah knew that too…but he just let her manipulate him.
Toxic. Cue Britney Spears.
I expected the ending to be more complicated than what it was. The characters were complicated- wonderfully complicated- and I couldn’t believe that this what the ending that I was given. This book deals with heavy subject matter, but – and I hate to say it- the fact that it was predictable was why it lacked that final climax for me.
Overall- quick to read (it’s only 287 pages long). If you like contemporary, toxic friendships (I do not say this sarcastically) and quite heavy themes, then I will most definitely recommend this novel to you.

This is a shitty book. I couldn't get into the story. Although I am okay with swear words but I find it so annoying in this book. Personally, the writing is a bit repetitive and a bit too mushy. And I just don't like and relate to the main character-Janie Vivian. Honestly, she's a shitty person that keeps messing things up with her best friends and soul mate- Micah. I would rather Micah turn gay for Dewey, seriously, Dewey is so much a better friend than Janie. He is always around for Micah and put up with the messed up love between Janie and Micah. Dewey always looking out for Micah which Janie didn't even though she knew it was wrong for her to do that but she didn't give a fuck anyway.
