I am torn because I loved the writing style of this book and I love the deeply flawed and beautiful characters. I love the "before" and "after", I love Janie's journal entries, I love how she thinks and breathes and feels and how she fills up the page with her life.
I hate how she is.
I hate her perceived notion of what is ok and what is not ok and I hate that Micah is manipulated to think the same way.
Janie is a GOOD girl behaving like a MEAN GIRL because that's what is cool.
WHY?
The whole story breaks my heart.
If you want a tearjerker, an easy read, and an author that will inspire you to read more Virginia Woolf, this is a book for you.
If you hate the way that rape culture is portrayed in YA literature, don't read this book.

Janie is annoyingly pretentious and Micah is a big pushover. I felt absolutely nothing about this book. I have to add that appreciated the writing style of Falling Into Place (hated the MC) but this one just confused me.
1.5/5

There is not a single character in this book that has even one redeeming quality. The writing was beautiful, but I did not care much for the story at all.
I just feel very conflicted about this whole book. I came into it with such high expectations (thank u Falling Into Place) that I feel like it was inevitable for me to feel a little let down. Part 1 was a chaotic mess, with a whole slew of problems (plot being a major one). But I adored Part 2. Idk.
This is the first time i write a review on Goodreads and this book is really boring. I can't believe i read this till the end.
First, i can't attach with the characters AT ALL. That's one of the most important thing when i am reading a novel. If i can attach with characters yet the story is bad, i'd still enjoy it. But this one, i can't relate to Micah nor Jannie as the main characters. Even Dewey or Ander or Piper. These characters are so dull and they are all toxic. No developement character and so bland!
Second, the story is too boring. Maybe i get it that the author wants to take an issue from rape, bullying and stuff like that which is happening currently in the teenagers. But the way the author describes every story chapter to chapter (after-before-after-before) it sounds irrelevant.
But another point is
I still appreciate the author's writing style. The vocabs that she's using, the words that she pours into her writing is lively.
But still i don't like this book haha.

Pre-read: I expected a lot from this book. Amy Zhang is a popular writer and the blurb caught my eye. A story about teenage love, school drama, friendship & disappearances.

Post-read: Rating it 3 ⭐️ for the reasons that I didn’t like the female protag. Her attitude was too much and that type of girl is one who, if she was real, I would stay away from. She was not helping in any way and as described in the book, she is someone who gets away with anything just because she can (i know right?!

Unfortunately, this was another book I’d hoped to love but really didn’t. I appreciate Zhang continues to tackle hard subjects about growing up, as she did in [b:Falling into Place|18163646|Falling into Place|Amy Zhang|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1393613084s/18163646.jpg|25526485]. Where the World Ends just didn’t connect with me quite in the same way. In it, we are presented with the alternating viewpoints (and also the present vs. the past narrative) of Micah and Janie, one-time next-door neighbors and friends who pretend their friendship doesn’t exist at school. Micah is trying to unroll the tragedy that’s blocked out parts of his memory – and meanwhile we hear the story that led up to it from Janie’s point-of-view and journal entries.
