Compulsive in a train wreck kind of way. Reminds me of the (bad) movie apart in so many ways I thought the book was written from it fit the first third.

Whew, does Amy Zhang know how to write a book that will punch a hole in your chest! Every book that I’ve read from her always speaks to a little part of me and sweeps me off my feet. This one is very emotional so please be warned and also check the trigger warnings for this book as well before going into it. It’s very hard to write teenagers well when you aren’t a teenager anymore, but Zhang does it in a way where they aren’t cringy and feel like I’m watching a MTV show about teenagers written by 40 year old men. It feels genuine and raw. Even though I couldn’t necessarily relate to the high school experiences that Janie and Micah went through, it didn’t feel overdone or exorbitant in any way. I love her writing and her characters so much. Zhang is just the author for me.
I love Amy Zhang just because her writing flows so nicely. She weaves a dark and beautiful tale of finding the truth about about a night forgotten. Not as good as her first novel, but still a story worth reading!

Honestly I’m just super confused. I really like Micah and I became super invested in his life. I also like the metaphors and some of the flowery writing. I like how it’s accurate in describing teenagers in how Janie is super juvenile in her planning her relationship but also wild and irresponsible with cars and drinking. I think she’s a terrible and irresponsible friend and she guilt trips Micah constantly after gas lighting situations. She never thinks about if things were reversed how she would feel. She just expects that he’ll be there and then he is. I also at no point in the book get how Dewey is a bad friend. Also major trigger warning for rape. Idk I’m just so confused on this book because Janie gets raped and she seeks revenge but it’s in a very irresponsible way. She puts a bunch of innocent people at risks. I think it’s one of those moral questions of do 2 wrongs make a right. Idk super confused. Probably would never read a book from this author again because it’s a bit dangerous. It reminds me of 13 reasons why dangerous

I've heard fantastic things about Amy Zhang's writing since her debut [b:Falling into Place|18163646|Falling into Place|Amy Zhang|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1393613084s/18163646.jpg|25526485]. I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of This is Where the World Ends and experience her beautiful writing firsthand.
This book contains rape, so if that is something that triggers you I would avoid this book.
Janie and Micah have known each other for a long time. They were best friends and also polar opposites. But Janie, on her way to high school, keeps their friendship a secret. As they navigate their unhealthy relationship, Janie then goes missing and Micah is left to pick up the pieces of what she left behind and to figure out where and why she's gone.
There were certain aspects of Janie's personality I enjoyed. She was carefree, a dreamer and imaginative, and so full of life, but the way she treated Micah was emotionally manipulative. Micah was a bit of a dull character, so I never really emotionally connected with him. Their relationship is toxic. This is Where the World Ends portrays a very unhealthy and very manipulative relationship between Janie and Micah. Janie does not treat Micah like a friend, and so I was never really behind their 'romance'. I'm not sure we are supposed to be.
This is Where the World Ends is written with dual narratives, Janie and Micah, but Micah's chapters alternative between 'Then' and 'Now', and Micah's 'Now' chapters were very confusing and disjointed and thus made it very difficult to read and follow what was going on.
This is Where the World Ends also deals with a very sensitive topic - rape. It's not exactly a perfect portrayal but I think it highlights the grief that comes with such an ordeal. Though at times I felt that it was used just as a plot device.
I think the reason I enjoyed this book so much was the beautiful metaphorical writing by Zhang, and I will be sure to keep an eye out for any new books that she writes.
