This series continues to be so good!! It's so tempting to just burn through all of them - I'm trying to pace myself a little.

Definately the best of the series so far, it had me wheeze laughing at the dialogue, and the plot kept me from putting it down.

Herron on top form, and Jackson Lamb as well. Another spy tale of mistakes and mishaps with devastating results, shot through with dark, bleak humour and a cast of characters that you can't help but root for despite their (numerous) flaws. Great stuff and one of the most consistently entertaining series in years.

This is one of the strongest books in Herron's Slough House series. I was close to the end and thinking to myself, "This could be a four-star book, but I really miss the way Herron has opened his three previous installments, with an inventory of the rooms, landings, and courtyard of Slough House. Too bad." And then, guess what he closed with? An inventory of the rooms, landings, and courtyard of Slough House. And it made so much more sense to close instead of open with it. Four stars.

The reason I love this opening/closing of Herron's is that it's the telltale sign of his omniscient narration. I don't usually find that narrative style interesting; in fact, it usually feels old fashioned. But Herron does it so well in these books. And that's not the only thing I enjoy from these stories. I love the sharp but literary descriptions, the pacing, and the flawed (really flawed) characters. And Gerard Doyle, the narrator, does a terrific job.
