I really enjoyed the two-part plot of this book, especially the tension-building espionage bits and the magic system expansion. Not sure why it has a bad rap for being “boring” and “plotless” since there was plenty of conflict and adventure!

I ended up loving the first book in this series, despite a rocky start. This book ... Not so much. It was long and slow. Every traumatic event was instantly cured by massive amounts of unrealisticly amazing sex. I don't mind the steamy scenes, but come on. Maybe some therapy? Or not 3+ different scenes where it's horror followed by mind blowing sex?? By the 3rd-ish sex scene I was FF to get back to the plot already. And there was definitely some lacking information and character building, despite the obvious (sometimes laboriously so) information building happening to fill in holes. By the time we figure out Jack and Andarna and General Sorengail dies... I felt like some of those things fell flat because we hadn't been getting much from or about those characters. I dunno, overall this one just moved slowly, had too much sex and not enough really good driving plot. And it was LONG. I'm taking a break, no desire to dive into book 3 after the crummy ending on top of a long, annoying book.

I was hesitant to pick up Iron Flame at first due to the mixed reviews, but I finally gathered the courage to dive into this thick book.
While I didn’t love it as much as the first installment, I still enjoyed the adventure Iron Flame has to offer.

Iron Flame picks up right where the first book left off, with Violet uncovering a monumental secret—one she’s now part of and must keep hidden from everyone, including her friends. The weight of this secrecy begins to take a toll on her. To make matters more challenging, her already strained relationship with Xaden grows even more distant as he is sent to the front lines.

What I enjoyed most about this book was uncovering more truths about their history, the Ward, and, of course, the dragons. It was a delight to reunite with Tairn and Andarna once more, especially seeing adolescent Andarna bring so much energy and life to the story.
The introduction of potential new allies also brought an exciting challenge and keeping things intriguing. Moreover, Violet’s friendships were a highlight—strong, supportive, and heartwarming to witness throughout.

As for the romance, Violet and Xaden’s relationship felt slightly repetitive.
Their cycle of arguing, reconciling, and then returning to square one became a bit tiresome after a while. However, toward the end, it seemed like they were finally making progress—though their chance to talk things out was quickly interrupted by chaos.

The last few chapters were intense, featuring a gripping battle where Violet, her friends, and new allies had to defend Basgiath before Empyrean fell. The twists and turns had me on the edge of my seat!

Overall, Iron Flame serves as a good sequel to Fourth Wing, building up to a jaw-dropping cliffhanger that left me screaming for the next book!
I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for Violet and Xaden in Onyx Storm

So what the hell did I just read? That was amazing. It kept me engaged just as much as the first book, and the character development of both Violet and Xaden was phenomenally done. The plot twists are never ending and well executed. It’s just genuinely so good.

Love doesn’t even have the decency to die. It just transforms into abject misery. That’s what this ache in my chest is: misery. Because love, at its root, is hope. Hope for tomorrow. Hope for what could be. Hope that the someone you’ve entrusted your everything to will cradle and protect it. And hope? That shit is harder to kill than a dragon.
