wow so much to say. what the hell.

so, first. it was clear to me that violet and xaden’s constant conflict was just there to be there. what greater purpose did it serve? getting on my f—king nerves?? why were they having the same fight throughout the entire book??

and holy shit don’t get me started on the smut scenes. they basically feel the same, but they’re just switching up positions. like at some point i just wanted to go back to the wards and dragons bcs the smut was just boring. it did not really add to my enjoyment of the book.

okay. on a positive note, the book was really well-divided in its two parts. the fight scenes are always really exciting and the dragon/wards mysteries were keeping me on my toes the whole time!! those were the parts i kept reading for.

oh, and whatever was going on with jack barlowe? insane. i would love to see yarros explore more of those darker elements in the next books. i can’t wait to see what yarros have in store for me with onyx storm. the venin intrigue me SO MUCH.

i loved that we got more on the gryphons and the fliers and how the poromish fighters are. they really were humbling the navarrians in the second part of the book and had me cackling. the cat/violet beef was also crazy. but i loved it.

the friendship moments are also really great. plus the sorrengail family family angst?? ate. mama sorrengail sacrificing herself?? hurt like hell. she was so morally grey and i actually wanted to know way more about how she thought about everything but we’ll never know i guess 💔

all in all, a little predictable but very entertaining and mysterious. i just don’t think i’m made for romantasy books like that 😰

Okay, wow.

I think this book was better than Fourth Wing? I unfortunately found myself wanting to know what happens next. Violet is still annoying, Rhi and Riodoc are still more interesting characters than her, and I still think this author isn’t a great writer. Why was this book so long? Why do Violet and Xaden have such an annoying dynamic? Why are the villains, bullies, antagonists so cartoonishly evil or mean? Why must I suffer? I kinda hate myself and everyone involved but I will be reading the next book to fully understand this phenomenon. This experience reminds me of reading the Mortal Instruments series as a teenager /neg

Also I’m begging this author to focus on ANY other couple in this series. I’m so tired of Violet and Xaden. I’ll even listen to straight couple stuff, I’m desperate.
