Love. So good. Learned a lot. I will say tho…of course they’re boyfriends. They did the frickin’ pinkie graze in the hallway before it was iconic!
Eyes are also really important in this story, and sometimes I feel like understand it and sometimes I feel like I don’t.
But I really liked it. Slow and bittersweet.

While I didn't enjoy Potok's style, overall i thought it was a good book with a good message. Rueven and Danny are good friends during the end of WW2 in Brooklyn. Rueven is a secular jew, has a good relationship with his zionist father and wants to become a Rabbi. Danny is an Hasidic jew and destined to lead his father's followers. Together they struggle to deal with their different backrounds and different futures. This book made me very interested in the creation of the state of Israel and the zionist movement.
I liked this book and what it teaches about tradition, culture, and friendship. It also has great insights into the intersection of religion and psychology, a subject I find fascinating.
"Reuven, as you grow older you will discover that the most important things that will happen to you will often come as a result of silly things, as you call them— "ordinary things" is a better expression. That is the way the world is."
What a strange book to read when I was in elementary school. I remember it was off-setting and probably beyond my years. I'll have to read it again to give a true review.
My second favorite Chaim Potok book after My Name Is Asher Lev.
