I learned so much about Judaism from this book. It was well written and I really enjoyed it.

I listened to this audio book on my snowboarding cross country adventure with Taylor and kids. I got it from Dad's Audible account and decided to try it out. I thought it was pretty good. I was unfamiliar with most of the Jewish terms but it was very well written. I wish it was longer and kept going.

I didn't get the themes as being "timeless" and "universal" as much as I had heard previously. The things these kids were dealing with seem pretty foreign to me. As with any historical fiction though, I did enjoy learning about some past events I wasn't familiar with previously.
A wonderful book on so many levels. I loved the informative view of Hasidim, and of the Jewish-American reaction in the aftermath of WWII. The characterization of Danny, Reuven, and their fathers felt authentic, particularly their Talmudic dialogs. The book tackles truly heavy issues, but manages to do so without being didactic. I appreciated that the novel left certain big questions open ended and recognized the ambiguities surrounding central issues, like the soul.
Read for English class freshman year of high school. Have wanted to read again.
It was good to read a book about friendship from the point of view of these boys. Their friendship is very sincere and deep.
