I’ve been conflicted over this review for a while. I didn’t love the book at all but I can see how incredible it would have been in historical context. Parts of it were also hard to read given with the conflict going on in Gaza right now. And honestly I felt like major parts of it went over my head - the silent treatment never made sense to me, even after the big revelatory speech at the end.
On the positive side though - stunningly rendered characters, and a truly beautiful friendship as the driving heart of the story, which is hard to do well (and the author absolutely nails here). The writing does feel a bit dated but was a surprisingly easy read considering its age.

The book was fine. I wish I had known more about the Jewish culture before I read this book. I read it for school, so immediately the star rating has decreased. However, I did read on an article about this book that many readers thought this book was a nice gay Romeo and Juliet story. Once I started to look at at this book as if it were a love story, I was enjoying it much more than I had been before.

Wouldn’t have picked this up had it not been for my Culture class during the English Teacher BA. Never had read a book before with such complicated male relationships. A great story about a community I knew nothing of in NY, friendship, family, religion, and the weight of duty.
