I thought this segment in the franchise was very well-written. So far, I've only been a fan of the Eric Nylund installments. But I was very impressed with this one and found its character explorations thoroughly entertaining (until the pulpy Epilogue, which very nearly ruined the entire book for me!)

YEAHHHHH JOHNSON LETS GO JOHNSON

This is like a 3.5 for me. It’s worth a read for some good pulpy video game sci-fi. The covenant character are the highlight as it’s neat to learn more about the inner workings there. Sets up the entire conflict of the halo universe which is also really interesting. If you have any interest in the halo universe I recommend, if not you can probably skip.

I actually really enjoyed it!

the universe of halo before any of the games, the rising action before the first game takes place. i loved how the novel helped complete the circle of the halo universe. this was probably my favorite of the series

Excellent book written by the lead writer for Halo during the Bungie years and is the best book for new readers to Halo to begin with in my opinion because it shows the first contact between the humans and the Covenant and how the war between them began. And to top it off, Sergeant Johnson is the main pov character. What’s not to like.
