There seems to be a trend of "picture books for adults". I'm not sure what to make of it. I picked this up based on some great reviews, but reading it quickly revealed that it has nothing to do with Julia Child, and even as a fictional story about a girl named Julia, I don't think it would hold a child's attention. Even I was bored reading it. I know there's always been a few picture books floating around that are targeted at adults, but I'm sure they're more entertaining than this one. The illustrations are lovely, though. I think this trend isn't for me.

A reimagining of Julia Child's childhood with some funny messages about adults!

Not a Julia Child biography (which the author makes abundantly clear in a note on the very first page). Delightful, whimsical, illustrations. Valuable message, if a little contrived. Fun book for the little chefs.

Knowing very little about Julia Child, but loving Julie Morstad's illustrating, and being named Julia myself, not surprised to receive this as a gift. Love the way the friendship is portrayed as imperfect but special nonetheless.

I got a copy of this from Net Galley.

This is one of those tough books that, while I am completely charmed, I can't necessarily think of a child I would recommend this to. It feels like Amelie or Chocolat. It's whimsy and food and I loved it.

But I would argue that this book's reading level and format are at odds. Any kiddo who would appreciate the quiet story and subtle illustrations might be already out of picture book format age.

I will try to push this one in my library and I would absolutely love to be surprised by both my kids and this book. I am willing to bet this would pair really well with a cooking program or some open-ended kitchen time ala Misha Collins and West's YouTube cooking time. Families and schools could do this a little easier than most libraries I know.

Again, I loved this book. The story was darling and the illustrations were sweet and unique. It was fanciful enough to give a new twist to the life of Julia Child but not so crazy that it ruined the connection with reality.
