Wow, what a massive volume of poetry. Kind of hard to get through in the allotted time (which in my case, due to living abroad, was even shorter). I prefer to be able to take my time with poetry. Read things a couple of times. As it was, if I didn't like the style or the subject matter of the Long Form poems, I abandoned them. I just didn't have the time to spend reading an epic 5-page poem if I knew I wasn't going to enjoy it. So, we come to the purpose of this volume. Because it's the showcase of all the poems nominated for the Rhysling Award, you could assume these are among the best poems of the year. The members of the SFPA are to choose 3 poems in each category in order of preference. Not being a poet and not very knowledgeable of the mechanics of poetry, I must make my choices based on whether I like them. Not whether they are the "best" poems of the lot.

At any rate, there were many, many poems that I liked. A lot. It was very hard to make a decision. But make it I did. May the best poems win.
