Checked this out years ago on the recommendation of a friend. It just popped into my head again. I can’t remember if I enjoyed it, but since it popped into my head randomly I must have not hated it.

Some of the jokes certainly did not age well and I‘m not quite sure if I understood the solution entz

Spectacularly boring. I couldn’t wait to be done with this book (audiobook). I was disappointed as there were so many good reviews! And people comparing to Dresden Files?!? Not even close! Let me tell you why I didn’t enjoy this book (very minor spoilers)
1- Too British. Think Goldmember- father and son talking 😖 A lot was lost in translation
2- Narrator. I liked his voice, didn’t even mind the breathiness. But he spoke soooo fast! Twice I checked to make sure I was on normal speed on my reader. I don’t think my brain could process the accent and slang. I felt like my brain was lagging just behind the story
3- None of the characters were likable or relatable. I didn’t care if anyone died or had their face fall off or lost their penis. Yes, really...
4- Other people seemed to think this was funny. At no point did I laugh, giggle or chuckle.
5- The story lacked transitions. One second they were at a crime scene and then were at a hospital or interviewing goddesses. Hard to follow. I had to go back and see if I missed something
6- I have heard of Punch and Judy. I knew they were puppets, but nothing else. So that part of the story did nothing for me
7- Weird jazz Noir music (is that a thing?) randomly played throughout book
8- I feel like there were more points to make, but I have forgotten the story as I type this. Off to reread the Dresden series to get this British taste out of my mouth

Good - like Prachett lite in the modern era. Enjoyable and witty.

"A wizard."
"Like Harry Potter?"
"No, not like Harry Potter."
"How come?"
"For one, I'm not a fictional character."

I was awed for a second before burst into laughter when I read that dialogue. I mean, seriously...

Rivers of London (Yes, I read the UK version) is about Peter Grant, a rookie copper who wanted to enter the murder squad, but thanks to his bad luck, he was placed in a data entry position. However, his luck started to change (and I'm not sure if it's for better or worse) when a ghost told him about the murder that just happened. His conversation with the ghost led him to enter a special unit under Thomas Nightinghale. Since that time on, the title "wizard apprentice" latched onto him more than his title as a copper, as he has to solve the exploding-heads murders.

All in all, this is a nice/fun/pretty easy read. There's not much stuffs about the magic, or describing the magic itself, probably because Peter is someone who easily distracted and still partially skeptical about wizardry. There are quite many times when Peter mentioned his father and how his father shaped him. And that makes me want to run some psychoanalysis on this particular character. xD

I started the book because of the summary, "CSI in urban fantasy style!". Being a CSI fan myself, I couldn't help and thinking that I'd meet someone like Grissom or Mac, or some drama like Grissom and Sara. But nah, that summary lied. This is a CSI urban fantasy. It's more like NCIS urban fantasy. xD

I was thinking to give this one a five stars. But the climax kind of failed me. The build up was a bit too long and what's supposed to be the climax is like a flat line with some small bumps. Entertaining, yes. Engaging, maybe. But yeah, I'm excited enough to wanting to continue to the second book right away. xD
