Some of the major themes include adaptation and evolution. Here, magical entities control the river and other elements, but to maintain their control, they have to evolve to the changing world. The main character, Peter, realizes that he must adapt magic to the modern age to use it, even though his teacher seems somewhat stuck in the last century. Peter may be the catalyst his teacher needs to keep the wizards relevant in a world of shifting loyalties.

idk why this book sat in my to read pile for so long, I knew I was going to like it, although I started reading it after 10pm so a couple of plot points eluded me. I've read a couple of the later books so it was nice to see where everything started

Loved this book, so glad I came across them. I’ll be reading the next one straight away. Similar in tone to Jasper Fforde.
