Finally, I have found an adult version of the Lockwood and Co series.
Funnily, this book had the gendered trappings of many a scifi/mystery novel written by a man, but I didn't find it has bothersome as I usually do. In the end, the main character comes off as a childish, hormone-ridden cad, but the narrative still treats the female characters as complex and interesting, despite the unnecessarily constant sexualization, and there's enough fun other stuff that it didn't really bother me. Still, I continue to be alarmed and frustrated that men feel comfortable writing this nonsense, and I sure hope this isn't the inner monologue they all have!!! Like, we all know that women have breasts, Jesus!

First third was gripping but got lost after that as there was too many confusing plot points and magic that wasn’t explained properly so I couldn’t follow

I really wanted to like this one as a lot of people had been recommending it and it sounded good, but I just couldn’t get into it and was glad when it was over.

This is really a 4.5 for me - so much fun, and lived up to the billing. A combo of a good police procedural with magic thrown in. And not a la Harry Potter, this is more grown up.

Fantastic light hearted read. Thoroughly enjoyed it in an afternoon. Great for when you don’t have the brain space for a bigger read.
