Loved it from the start , hated it for a bit then ended up crawling back to it and fell in love even harder. I have no words.
Its like a mix of Alphonse Daudet , my shower thoughts + my personal experiences and it also has some dark academia element .
This book means a lot to me , it makes me feel seen and articulate my thoughts so eloquently , though me and Stephen shared similar burdens we took different paths therefore our liberation was different.
I love it because it resonates with me , (this is the least objective and messiest review ive ever made. I love this book.)

Had to read it at university, therefore I did not like it. Should probably read again, now that I don't have to anymore.
I wouldn't recommend this to readers who read purely for entertainment. For me the brilliance of the novel comes in the analysis, the examination of the text itself.
This is my nth reread. A wonderful utterly masterful coming of age story. There’s so much here that is real and starkly honest. The humour and the beauty as well as the longing for innocence past and the wonderful yearning for some place else. Joyce doesn’t write a dull sentence in the whole book. And he does that strange trick of doing it rather than telling you about it. So instead of telling you about how central hell is to catholic childhood, he has a massive sermon about hell during which you feel the terror alternating with boredom that I recognize as my own experience. A masterpiece.

A rather uneven novel for something so tortuously thought out. Not convinced by Joyce's theory of the artist and separation from the world and others.
