This style of just switching in the middle of some ordinary days of someones life is impressive, followong some steps and setting the next scene some years in the future is skillfull and I am sure I would't be able to do so by myself. Indeed an artists portray. Linguistically delighting as well.

At its core. The story itself is fine and to a point I relate. Stephens journey is that of a young man discovering himself and grappling with that which influenced his childhood (largely Catholicism) and later unshackling himself from his religion, his family and country to pursue the writing he loves. I related because I too (although much younger) cast off the confinement of Religion, and more recently grappled with my own commitments to the nation I grew up in. These internal debates shape us and help us grow. I know I am a completely different person than the person I was in my first year of undergrad for example.

The issue I have is that it just is a drag to read. A far cry from some of the writing in Dubliners. This book has its moments but far too much of it was just not prose in which I felt sucked into and desired to keep reading.

A diss track vs the catholic church

The perspective and writing style made me gag, and the boner everyone seems to have for this book flies over my head. I jumped around sporadically and loosely use the term "read"

I have tried to read this book about 10 times. I figured any book that started with "Along came a moo moo cow" had to be right up my alley.

I officially give up.
