adventurous mysterious

Easy read, Elric is a bitchhhhh

I'm revisiting a seminal series that may or may not live up to its hype depending how patient the reader is. Contemporary readers will find a few flaws, such as showing/not telling and passive voice.

Cymoril, the female lead, is entirely typical of female characters in this era -- her most forceful action is to faint. Elric himself is so mopey at times and makes such foolish choices that I wonder if he's secretly suicidal. Or even not so secretly.

On the other hand, the scope is amazing and the imagination is wild. Creatures, architecture, ships, dragons, sentient swords... Wow.

Quite enjoyable! Pretty short though, I would have liked a bit more depth I think, things moved pretty quickly

A book that feels made for me through and through. Despite being under 200 pages, it has a great sense of scale and scope, has plenty of great scenes and lines to latch on to, and tells a complete story leaving room for much more. This book has revenge, lots of magic, evil gods, different planes of reality, talk of destiny and free will, all while occurring in a setting that feels completely alien. It carries within it most of the things that make fantasy so enjoyable to me. And yet, while all of these factors may explain this rating for those who know me, I do not want to understate how much it offers beyond this. Elric is in an extremely interesting situation. He is a man who lives in books and ponders morality, yet he is also the emperor of a race that literally does not possess morality or sympathy for other races. He is the biggest outlier within his people and yet he rules them. This creates conflict, both internal and external that left me entranced with every page.

This book is very creative and feels like a breath of fresh air even though I am reading it in 2021, and it has inspired more works than I can count including plenty that I love. This includes Berserk by Kentaro Miura, my #1 favorite fiction, as well as all of my subsequent favorite works of fantasy. Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere, Steven Erikson and Ian Esselmont’s Malazan World, and Michael R Fletcher’s novels have all been influenced by the saga. Elric is even a titan of influence in heavy metal music, with numerous bands, albums, and songs named after Moorcock’s creations. It almost feels as if the Elric Saga is in my blood and I was destined to enjoy it.

From what I’ve gathered Moorcock’s writing has inconsistencies and varying levels of quality throughout his career, but I can say for certain I loved this without any knowledge of the other works. Hopefully I can continue to get something out of them even if they fail to reach the heights set here with my introduction.
